“Music enables us to say what we
are not yet aware of.”
— Bernhard Melbye Voss
Vienna-based Danish-German conductor, composer/orchestrator, and pianist Bernhard Melbye Voss made his conducting debut with the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra in a Danish program at the Great Hall of the Wiener Musikverein.
Driven by a profound passion for film music, Bernhard works as a session conductor for film music productions at the internationally acclaimed Synchron Stage Vienna, where he has conducted music for productions and projects associated with Lucasfilm, Legendary Studios, Netflix, Disney, Marvel, DC Comics, Paramount, AMC, Warner, HBO, Amazon Studios, BBC, Skydance, MGM, Sony, Hulu, Dharma Productions, Tencent, Blizzard, Activision, ByteDance, NetEase, EA, Apple, 20th Century Studios, and Sky, among others. In this capacity, he has had the opportunity to work with many of the world's leading film and television composers, from Hollywood to Bollywood.
In addition to his work as a session conductor, Bernhard works as an orchestrator for film music and has guest lectured on scoring-session techniques and film music at the Konrad Wolf Film University of Babelsberg. His experience encompasses the practical and artistic demands of recording orchestral music for film, television, games, and other large-scale media productions.
Since 2017, Bernhard has served as Main Conductor of the Valsassina Ensemble Wien, and he also holds the position of Chief Conductor of the Symphonious Quest Orchestra.
Alongside his work with European orchestras, his versatility as a musician has led him into a wide range of musical worlds and collaborations. He has shared the stage with internationally renowned artists including Pritam, Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, Udit Narayan, Shaan, Lucky Ali, and Neeti Mohan, among many others.
With a profound interest in languages, the relationship between music and language, and the linguistic structures of music, Bernhard also works extensively in opera and with singers. After completing his conducting studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, he continued his studies of Italian opera in Rome on a scholarship awarded by the Foundation of Queen Ingrid of Denmark. His work in opera reflects his particular interest in the relationship between text, language, vocal expression, and musical interpretation.
As a pianist, Bernhard's artistic focus lies particularly in improvisation. His approach is shaped by a fascination with the connections and similarities between musical cultures and styles. This same openness informs his work as a composer, where he draws on a broad spectrum of stylistic influences rather than limiting himself to a single musical language.
In 2021, Bernhard conducted the world premiere of his First Symphony on the main stage of the Donauinselfest in Vienna, adding another dimension to his work as a composer and conductor.
Across classical repertoire, opera, film music, improvisation, and contemporary musical production, Bernhard Melbye Voss approaches music as a medium of communication—one capable of expressing ideas, emotions, and connections that words alone cannot yet articulate.
